PCAT Tutoring FAQ

Pharmaceutical schools have a special application test called the PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test) designed to identify qualified applicants. It measures general academic ability as well as the scientific background necessary for pharmaceutical study. If you feel like you could use an edge in your preparations, Varsity Tutors can help you find a knowledgeable PCAT tutor who can meet your needs.

The PCAT has five timed sections, and you are not permitted to go back to a previous section after finishing another. This makes time management a very important skill throughout the entire test. The first section is a 30-minute Writing portion where you are expected to compose an original essay arguing for a solution to a provided problem. Many students struggle to articulate themselves in writing, but an experienced PCAT tutor can show you how to outline your thoughts so that you have some direction. An outline also ensures that you don't forget any important points you intended to make.

Online PCAT Tutoring review by Matthew
We began by discussing the revisions done by the student on two essays. Following this, we spent time discussing vocabulary strategies i.e., general patterns of etymology, vowels relations, and so forth. Following this, we did a rough and quick review of major geometry concepts. I assigned problems from the sections of the prep book on triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles. Likewise, I assigned vocabulary lists for review and small sections of vocabulary-related verbal questions.

The student and I met for another session of GRE practice. While we continued to focus mainly on the math section, we also branched out to the writing section. We read over some practice prompts and went over the two types of essays. In math we practice word problems as well as the properties of triangles. I think with her strength in math she should start spending more time going over vocab and practicing writing. So I assigned her to write an essay as homework.

We went over the practice questions the student had done the week before. We then went over the topics we had yet to cover including slope, equations of lines, factoring, solving quadratic equations, and graphs. We then reviewed all the topics we had gone over thus far by looking at 12 practice questions which I had selected previously.

The session began with reviewing the previously assigned exercises. The student did very well with the basic problems. We went over the important rules for simplifying exponents. The basic problems were easy for him because he simply calculated out the expressions as opposed to manipulating and simplifying expressions using the rules of exponents. We went through the problems slowly, and throughout, I would point out which rule we would want to use and why. At the end, I had him write out the rules. I assigned him additional exponent practice for next session.

Online PCAT Tutoring review by Ali
The student and I read about 6 books today. I only had to ask him to focus once and he seems to be opening up more to me. He is now willing to ask me what a word means when he can read it but doesn't know it. I think this is a real step forward for us and indicative that he feels more confident once he gets to know his tutor a bit more. The student doesn't love to read aloud, especially for an hour, so we will start incorporating a bit of writing to switch things up. He also specifically requested we do some math next time so we will work on that as well.
